Deep dive into creating Air Quality warning notifications

Stay informed about your local air quality with the new Air Quality Index Warning shortcut. This automation proactively checks the hourly weather forecast, identifies the highest predicted Air Quality Index (AQI) for the day, and sends you a notification if it exceeds a level you define. It's an essential tool for anyone in areas with fluctuating air quality who needs timely alerts to plan their outdoor activities safely.

What's new

This new shortcut leverages a combination of built-in actions to provide intelligent environmental monitoring. It uses the Get Hourly forecast action to pull detailed air quality data for your current location. This data is then passed to the Use Cloud model action, which uses Apple Intelligence to parse the forecast and pinpoint the worst AQI value and the specific time it will occur. An If condition then checks this value against a customizable threshold to determine whether to send a Show notification alert.

Getting started

  1. Download the Air Quality Index Warning shortcut from the gallery.
  2. Open the shortcut and locate the If action. Change the number (default is 75) to your preferred AQI threshold for receiving a warning.
  3. Navigate to the Automation tab in the Shortcuts app and create a new Time of Day automation.
  4. Set your desired time (e.g., every morning at 8:00 AM) and ensure Run Immediately is selected.
  5. Add the Run Shortcut action and select the Air Quality Index Warning shortcut.

Key capabilities

  • Proactive Alerts: Automatically receive a notification on days when the air quality is predicted to be poor, without needing to manually check the weather.
  • Customizable Sensitivity: Easily adjust the AQI threshold within the shortcut's If statement to match your personal health needs or sensitivity to air quality changes.
  • Intelligent Forecasting: The shortcut uses AI to analyze the entire day's hourly forecast to find the single worst AQI value, so you're aware of the day's peak risk.
  • Detailed Information: The notification provides both the peak AQI number and the time it is expected to occur, giving you actionable information to plan your day.

Tips for getting the most out of this feature

To customize your alert, navigate to the If action in the shortcut. If you want a notification for any AQI higher than 50 (Moderate), simply change the value from 75 to 50. You can also edit the text in the Show notification action to add more context or personalize the message that appears on your screen.

Summary

The Air Quality Index Warning shortcut is a practical tool for health-conscious users, transforming passive weather data into active, personalized alerts. By automating daily checks and leveraging AI for smart analysis, you can stay ahead of poor air quality conditions effortlessly. Set it up once as a daily automation to ensure you always have the information you need to protect your well-being.
