Deep dive into summarizing documents, web pages, and news articles

With the introduction of Apple Intelligence, your device can now help you process information faster than ever. The new summarization capabilities built into the Shortcuts app allow you to quickly get the gist of long documents, web pages, and news articles without leaving the app you're in. This feature saves you valuable time by transforming lengthy content into concise, easy-to-digest summaries.

What's new

This release integrates Apple Intelligence directly into the Shortcuts app through a powerful new Use Model action. This allows you to create custom shortcuts that can receive text, files, or web content and generate summaries on demand. You can run these shortcuts from the Share Sheet, an automation, or directly within the Shortcuts app to get key takeaways, bullet points, or a simple paragraph summary of almost any content.

How to use this feature

  1. Find a document, such as a PDF, in the Files app or a webpage in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button to open the Share Sheet.
  3. Scroll down and select a summarization shortcut, such as Summarize Doc AI.
  4. The shortcut will automatically process the content using Apple Intelligence.
  5. A window will appear showing the generated summary of your document or article.

Key capabilities

  • Summarize any document: Instantly create summaries of PDFs, text files, and other documents directly from the Share Sheet.
  • Get key points from articles: Quickly understand the main ideas of news stories in Apple News or articles on the web without having to read the full text.
  • Automate email summaries: Set up an automation to automatically summarize email attachments as soon as they arrive in your inbox, giving you the essential information right away.
  • Extract specific information: Customize shortcuts to pull out specific details, like recipes from a social media post or key points from a research paper, and save them directly to your notes.

Tips for getting the most out of this feature

You can customize the prompt inside your summarization shortcuts to get different results. For example, you can ask for a 'three-sentence summary', 'a list of key takeaways in bullet points', or 'a single paragraph overview'. You can also choose which AI model to use—On-Device for speed and privacy, Private Cloud Compute for more complex tasks, or even an external model like ChatGPT for longer content.
