Deep dive into creating a database of your favorite food spots

Ever discover a great restaurant while traveling, only to forget its name when you visit the city again? This release introduces a powerful way to build, rate, and recall your favorite food spots using a set of interconnected shortcuts. You can now create a personal, location-aware database of restaurants you've enjoyed, ensuring you never lose track of a great meal.

What's new

We've added a pair of smart shortcuts—Favorite Food Spots and Lookup Fav Food Spots—that work together to turn a simple Apple Note into a dynamic database. When you visit a new place, the Favorite Food Spots shortcut lets you find it based on your current location, add a star rating, and automatically save it. Later, when you're looking for a recommendation, the Lookup Fav Food Spots shortcut uses your current location to intelligently pull only the relevant saved spots from your database.

Getting started

  1. Saving a new spot: When you're at a restaurant you want to save, run the Favorite Food Spots shortcut.
  2. Choose the correct business from the list of nearby locations.
  3. Select a star rating from 1 to 5. The shortcut will automatically create or append an entry to your 'Favorite Food Spots' note in Apple Notes.
  4. Finding a saved spot: To find your favorite places nearby, run the Lookup Fav Food Spots shortcut.
  5. The shortcut will analyze your database and display a list of your saved restaurants that are close to your current location.
  6. Select a restaurant from the list to open its location directly in Apple Maps for directions.

Key capabilities

  • Build a Personal Database: Automatically log every favorite spot with its name, address, your personal rating, and a map link into a single, organized Apple Note.
  • Location-Aware Retrieval: When traveling, the system intelligently searches your database to show only the favorite spots you've saved in your current city or area.
  • Simple Rating System: Quickly assign a 1-5 star rating to each entry, helping you remember which places are worth a return visit.
  • One-Tap Directions: Every entry in your database includes a direct link to the location in Apple Maps, making it easy to get directions.

Tips for getting the most out of this feature

For best results, run the Favorite Food Spots shortcut while you are still at the restaurant to ensure accurate location detection. Since the database is a standard Apple Note, you can also manually edit entries, add personal notes about what you ordered, or remove places you no longer recommend.

Summary

This feature transforms the simple act of saving a location into creating a powerful, personalized travel and food guide. By combining location services with a simple rating system and database functionality, you can effortlessly build a reliable list of your go-to spots. It's the perfect tool for foodies and frequent travelers who want to remember and revisit their favorite discoveries.
