Deep dive into automating lights with door sensors

Tired of lights being left on in empty rooms? This automation allows you to automatically turn off lights, fans, and other devices when you leave a room, using a simple door sensor as the trigger. It's a convenient way to save energy and make your smart home feel more intelligent.

What's new

You can now create sophisticated automations that respond to the state of a door sensor. By using the A Sensor Detects Something trigger, you can initiate a sequence of actions when a door opens or closes. For more advanced control, you can convert this automation into a Shortcut, allowing you to add conditions like a time delay before the actions are executed.

How to use this feature

  1. From the Home or Automation tab, tap the + icon and select Add Automation.
  2. Choose the event trigger A Sensor Detects Something.
  3. Select your door contact sensor from the list of available sensors.
  4. Set the trigger condition to Opens to activate the automation when someone is leaving the room.
  5. Select the lights, fans, or other accessories you want to control and set their desired state (e.g., Turn Off).

Tips for getting the most out of this feature

For added flexibility, convert your automation to a Shortcut. This allows you to add a Wait action, preventing lights from turning off immediately if the door is opened briefly. A 30 to 60-second delay is a great starting point. To do this, scroll to the bottom of the accessory selection screen and tap Convert To Shortcut.

Key capabilities

  • Energy Savings: Automatically turn off lights and fans in rooms like closets, pantries, and bathrooms when they are no longer in use.
  • Enhanced Convenience: Eliminate the need to manually turn off multiple switches when leaving a room.
  • Advanced Control: Use the 'Convert to Shortcut' feature to add delays, preventing lights from turning off prematurely.
  • Multi-Device Triggering: A single door opening can trigger multiple actions across different accessories, such as turning off lights, pausing music on a HomePod, and turning off an exhaust fan.

Summary

Automating your lights based on door sensors is a simple yet powerful way to make your smart home more responsive and efficient. By setting up this automation, you can ensure that energy isn't wasted on lights left on in empty rooms. Converting the automation to a Shortcut unlocks even more powerful customization, giving you precise control over your home's environment.
