How to Integrate Your Favorite Apps with Raycast Extensions

Spotlight is fine for basic file searches. But if you want a tool that actually talks to your apps, you need Raycast. It easily replaces your clipboard manager, text expander, and window manager all at once.

The real magic is how deeply it integrates with the apps you already use every day. You do not have to settle for a slow search bar. By the end of this guide, you will have your favorite tools wired directly into your keyboard. Let us dive in.

Step 1: Get your apps from the Store

Raycast has a built-in store filled with third-party extensions. You do not have to visit a website to find them. Everything happens right inside the app.

1. Open Raycast.
2. Type Store and hit Return.
3. Search for apps you use daily like Bear, Notion, Apple Notes, or Things.
4. Hit Return to install the extension.

Once installed, these extensions add a bunch of new commands to your Raycast menu. You can search notes, create tasks, and trigger actions without ever launching the actual applications.

Step 2: Set up aliases for instant access

Typing full command names every time is way too slow. Raycast lets you set up short text aliases for your most-used actions.

1. Open Raycast and press Cmd + , to open your settings.
2. Go to the Extensions tab.
3. Find your newly installed app or command.
4. Click into the Alias column and type a short abbreviation.

Keep these simple. You might use yy for Search YouTube or gg for Search Google. If you assign n to Search Notion, you can open Raycast, type n, hit the spacebar, and immediately type your search query. Raycast will pull results directly from your Notion workspace.

Step 3: Map global hotkeys

Aliases are great, but they still require you to open Raycast first. Global hotkeys let you trigger an action from anywhere on your Mac.

To take this to the next level, you can map your Caps Lock key to act as a "Hyper Key". A Hyper Key pretends you are pressing Cmd + Shift + Option + Ctrl all at the same time. This gives you a massive layout of fresh keyboard shortcuts that will not conflict with your existing apps.

1. In Raycast settings, go to the Advanced tab.
2. Under Hyper Key, select Caps Lock.
3. Go back to the Extensions tab.
4. Find an action you use constantly, click the Hotkey column, and press your new Caps Lock key plus a letter.

Try mapping Caps Lock + B to search Bear Notes. You can map Caps Lock + E to the Raycast Emoji Picker or Caps Lock + G for GIF Search. Now you can bring up your favorite tools instantly.

Step 4: Take action with Cmd + K

Integrations go much deeper than just opening documents. You can actually complete tasks directly inside the Raycast search window.

Let us use the Things to-do app as an example. You can search for an upcoming task. Once it is highlighted in the results, do not press Return. Instead, press Cmd + K. This opens the actions menu in the bottom right corner of the window.

From here, select Mark as Completed. The task is checked off and removed from your list. You just managed your day without ever opening your task manager.

Step 5: Supercharge your snippets

Raycast completely replaces standalone text expander apps. It lets you create snippets that automatically expand into full paragraphs or templates. You can even inject dynamic content from your favorite apps right into your text.

1. Open Raycast and search for Create Snippet.
2. Give your snippet a name and type your text.
3. Add a trigger keyword. Wrap it in brackets like [share] so you do not accidentally type it during normal conversation.
4. Click the + icon in the bottom right to insert dynamic placeholders.

You can choose Clipboard Text from the placeholder menu. If you copy a YouTube URL and type your [share] trigger in a message, Raycast will automatically paste your predefined message along with the exact link you just copied.

A quick setting to tweak

Before you go, there is one crucial setting you should change. By default, Raycast remembers your last search for about 60 seconds. This means if you dismiss the window and reopen it, your old text is still sitting there.

Go to Settings > Advanced and look for Pop to Root Search. Change the dropdown from the default time limit to Immediately.

Now, every time you open Raycast, you get a completely clean slate. You are always ready to type your next alias or command.
